Villainous Vanilla Vampire
Prologue
She walked her vanilla field the way she always had—barefoot, unhurried, her green velvet robe loose against her skin, the night air cool where it found her. The blossoms leaned as she passed, not from wind but from something older, something neither she nor the vanilla orchids had ever needed to name. Her scent rose around her like a second skin warm, sweet, wholly her own. No other vampire had ever carried it. No other being. She had stopped wondering why a long time ago.
Above her, the moon hung generous and full, light feeding her the way it always had—quietly, without asking anything in return. From the barn she could hear Pamono shifting in his stall, the familiar sound of him settling his weight from one side to the other. He was fine. He was always fine. But she would check on him before dawn, because that is what you do for the ones still beside you.
She paused at the edge of her field, admiring the night sky.
Many beyond her borders feared her—whispers of the pale woman who was rarely seen outside her land. Merchants returned quiet, strange—if they returned at all.
They called her “Villainous Vanilla Vampire,” like she was from a fairy tale. Their rumors of what her kind once did—what they might still do. They had their stories. Most of them wrong. The truth of what vampires were, the things they did, was a history humanity had written to suit itself. She stopped wasting anger on that ignorance long ago. She was simply one of the last, tending her vanilla orchids, alone by something less than choice and more than loss.
Am I the poisonous flower they decided I was?
A familiar presence stirred beneath the sky—the scent of aged wood and burning embers. She enjoyed the faint hint of maple. Dancing Fireside. The ancient blaze that kindled itself at dusk and faded at dawn, a source of magic she had drawn from for longer than she could remember. She trusted it the way one trusts a river—not for kindness, but for constancy. Tonight, though, something in it had shifted. The warmth carried a thread she did not recognize, fine and deliberate, like something newly woven into an old pattern.
Then she smelled it. Caramel and spice, layered beneath the smoke—sweet, autumnal, warm the way a custard tart fresh from the oven is warm. For half a breath it was pleasant, welcome. Familiar, even. But it did not belong to her field. It did not belong to the fire. It curled toward her the way a hand might, slow and certain, as if it already knew the shape of her. And beneath the scent, woven so finely she almost mistook it for memory, a voice—low, smooth, not her own—whispered her name.
She did not remember deciding to walk toward the Dancing Fireside. Only that she had already begun.
